Location

Port De Pollenca (or Puerto Pollensa) is both a town and municipality on the north west coast of Mallorca, approximately 58km from Palma.

Description

Puerto Pollenca is overlooked by the imposing Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range, which gives the town a startling backdrop. An upmarket resort, the marina at Puerto Pollensa contains many expensive yachts and sailing boats, as well as a small number of fishing vessels, although the town’s fishing industry has declined considerably, making way for the much more profitable tourist industry.

There is an excellent beach here, a yacht club and the pretty Plaça Miquel Capllonch town square, laid around the town’s church. However, the most famous part of Puerto Pollensa is its beautiful cobbled “Pine Walk”, stretching along the beach and dotted with cafes, shops and restaurants serving both international and traditional fare.

There is a large overseas investment contingency here, with buyers snapping up properties both along the Pine Walk and indeed throughout the town.  This has led to more building development taking place in the area.

With regards to entertainment, there are few facilities for children, most being hotel-based.  There are also no discos or nightclubs, most evening entertainment being hotel-based, allowing both residents and holidaymakers to fully enjoy the sounds of lapping waves in the evening as they make their nightly excursion along the Pine Walk.

Puerto Pollensa has a certain charm which dates back fifty or so years, when tourism first came to the area. Although there is a Burger King here and one or two Brit and Irish bars, on the whole, both the resort itself and its facilities are of a higher class, with holidaymakers and summer residents returning here year on year.

There are around three main shopping areas in Puerto Pollensa, with a good selection of shops including boutiques, fashion stores, jewellery shops and even a crystal shop.  This is very much a working town, although many Spanish workers in turn leave in the winter months, when many of the restaurants, shops and facilities close down and the town’s character changes to that of a small, quiet, residential area.

Although there is still a lot of building development taking place in this area, Puerto Pollensa has managed to retain a great deal of character and its surrounding countryside is nothing short of breathtaking.
