Fornells

Location

The town of Fornells forms part of the municipal district of Es Mercadal , situated on the northern coast of Menorca, around 30km from  Mahon.

Description

Fornells was originally founded in the sixteenth century as a defence against the Barbary pirates.  Its castle was eventually demolished in the 18th century, leaving only the watch tower on the headland, outside the village.  In later years, it became a small fishing village.

Located in a sheltered bay, Fornells has a beautiful harbour and several outstanding fish restaurants, serving fresh seafood dishes. The area extending from the port to Cap Gros and Punta des Morter has been officially declared a 'Marine Reservation Area'. 

There are four coves and three small islands within the bay of Fornells, which can only be reached by boat; the islands being the only home to a specific species of lizard. 

A wide variety of watersports are available here, including windsurfing, sailing and diving.   For those less interested in getting their feet wet but still want to remain active, horse riding, cycling and golf are also available in the region.

Fornells, with its resident population of around 1000, is a sizeable town, yet is fiercely proud of its heritage. It attracts both wealthy investors and tourists, drawn by the town’s immense charm and character.
