Ciutadella

Location

Once the capital of Menorca, the town of Ciutadella sits on the west side of the island.

Description

Ciutadella dates back to Roman times and was originally known as Jammona.  Excavations and the discovery of Roman artefacts are constantly taking place even today in the old quarter and much of the old town is surrounded by the "Contramurada", which now runs where the original city walls would once have stood. 

The area around Ciutadella  is the nearest point to the neighbouring island of Majorca and on most days it is possible to clearly see the northern Majorcan coastline

Ciutadella does not of course have its own beach.  However, there are several small beaches at nearby Cala Santandria and Sa Caleta, around 3km away, both offering a variety of water sports facilities.

The town’s harbour is surprisingly one of the smallest ports in the Mediterranean but plays host to a variety of sailing vessels. There are a good number of shops, bars and restaurants, with the focus very much on culture and relaxation.

The town’s main square, Plaza de's Born, is dominated by an obelisk commemorating the defence of the city in 1558 when it was attacked by the Moors.

Property for sale in Ciutadella is a mixture of traditional houses and modern apartments and villas, none of which detract from the beauty of the town, which has managed to hang onto its culture, heritage and tradition.  A modern six bedroom house with pool will cost around €3m, whilst a large three bedroom townhouse in Ciutadella would be priced in the region of €1.5m.
