Cala Ratjada

Location

Cala Ratjada is situated in the municipal district of Capdepera, in the far north east of Mallorca, around 65km from Palma.  It was originally the principal port for Capdepera, focusing on fishing and trading.

Description

Originally a small fishing port, Cala Ratjada, like many villages in Mallorca, has been transformed by the onset of the tourism industry since the 1960s. However, it has, until recently, remained fairly non-commercialised.  There is a strong German and French population here, although the British are beginning to recognise its many outstanding aspects.  This outcrop forms the nearest point of Mallorca to its neighbouring island, Menorca, and a daily ferry service runs from Cala Ratjada over to Menorca.

Capdepera as a municipality boasts miles of stunning coastline and sandy coves, most of them having been awarded the Blue Flag by the EU.  It is fairly unique in Mallorca in that beautiful, shady pine forests directly overlook the beach and for this reason, this part of the Mallorcan coast has been declared by the Balearic Islands local Goverment as a specially protected bird sanctuary.

The closest beach to Cala Ratjada is that of Cala Agulla, just a short distance away, offering golden sands and clear waters.  There are also a number of pubs, shops and restaurants, offering the predictable gifts and basic provisions.

Although fairly busy with families in the summer months, the colder months tend to attract the more mature holidaymaker, keen for a warm sunshine break and a chance to enjoy the tranquillity of the region.

Many properties in this village have been given over to redevelopment, and a significant portion have been modernised over the years.  This has resulted in a selection of truly luxurious apartments and villagehouses, ripe for investment yet fairly reasonably priced.  A five bedroom villagehouse will normally be priced in the region of €600,000.
