Cala d'Or, a modern purpose built holiday resort favoured by both British and Germans, forms part of the municipal district of Santanyí, on the east coast of Majorca, around 65km from Palma.
Originally a small fishing village, Cala d'Or today is a resort that has grown considerably over the last forty years, now stretching for over 4km and encompassing several small sandy coves, the largest of which, Cala Llonga, has a large marina. Around many of these coves can be found beautiful, traditionally white washed cottages, originally fishermen’s homes.
The town centre has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants which lead down to Cala Gran, a small, pretty beach with its own café/restaurant, but otherwise, there are few facilities for children. Nearby, Es Trenc also has an excellent beach which is much larger, with clear waters and golden sand. The other sandy beach is Cala Ferrera, just a little further north , which has some great beach bars.
The glitzy Cala d'Or marina attracts both people watchers and those who want to be seen, having a constant supply of expensive yachts and sailing boats moored here.. The restaurants overlooking the marina serve fresh seafood and are considered to be a cut above.
There is a Sunday morning market at the nearby town of Felanitx, which is always extremely popular and is considered by locals to be one of the best in Majorca for picking up locally made pottery at excellent prices. There is also a market selling local produce at Santanyi every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
As can be expected, there is little in the way of evening entertainment in Cala D’Or, with most organised events being hotel-based. However there are a few lively bars dotted throughout the resort, although these are in no way rowdy.
