Valldemossa

Location

Valldemossa is both a village and a municipality, lying 15km north of Palma on the north west coast of Mallorca. A short drive away is the wonderful village of Banyalbufar, which is trully idylic. It is true to say that some of the property for sale in Valldemossa and Banyalbufar is possibly the most beautiful and exclusive on the island of Mallorca.

Description

Valldemossa is a beautiful town, surrounded by mountains.  It is particularly famous for the Royal Charterhouse of Jesus of Nazareth , which was built in the fourteenth century and later became the home of such celebrated people as Chopin and his lover, George Sand in the nineteenth century, as well as Nicaraguan poet,  Ruben Dario.  Sand’s book, 'A Winter in Mallorca' tells of the awful time the author spent on the island. 

Valldemossa, due to its mountainous location, is particularly popular with walkers and there is both a hostel and a superb hotel in the area, as well as a lovely restaurant .  American film star Michael Douglas, who owns a home on the island, also owns his own restaurant here.   The town’s harbour, Port de Valldemossa, just a short drive away, also has a number of restaurants offering some excellent seafood dishes. These features of the area contibute to the property for sale in Valldemossa commanding relatively high prices. 

Quaint and genuine, most houses in Valldemossa are made of stone and have a small ceramic plate outside as an offering to the saint of the village, Beata.  This is one of the few areas in Mallorca which regularly experiences snow, due to its high altitude, making the town feel all the more secluded and indeed at times, cut off.

There is a real sense of community here, only disturbed by the hoards of walkers which come through in the summer months.  Nevertheless, Valldemossa has managed to retain its individual style and boasts some beautiful properties, for those who would like to make their home here.
