Son Bou

Location

Son Bou is a large holiday resort situated on the south coast of Menorca, around 20km from Mahon.  It forms part of the municipality of Alaior.  

Description

Son Bou has the longest, and what is widely considered to be the best beach on the island, with almost 2 miles of clean sand, protected by sand dunes and marshes, which are in turn, themselves protected. There is a wide variety of birdlife here, enough to satisfy even the keenest Twitcher!  There are strong undercurrents in the waters off the area though, so swimming is not recommended.

Unlike many resorts in Menorca, Son Bou also boasts a degree of history, having been settled since the fourth century AD.  There is a fortified village nearby, and a Christian basilica, giving Son Bou that little bit more character perhaps than many other resorts.

The town itself only has a handful of shops, which tend to cater mainly for tourists, although there are one or two boutiques selling designer labels. There are also several supermarkets selling basic provisions.

Although the town has history, the resort itself is relatively new, with most developments here being villas.

A family resort, children are kept entertained by the various playgrounds and in particular, The Maze Theme Park. Most evening entertainment is hotel-based, athough there are few low-key bars with live acts and a small disco.  Son Bou restaurants, meanwhile,  serve a mixture of traditional Menorcan dishes and international menus.
