Location

Description

Records of a settlement at the foot of Puig Maria date back to the fifth century.  However, although it was originally a medieval town in its current state, Pollensa has been settled by the Egyptians, Romans, Moors and Ottomans.  It has, like many other resorts in Mallorca, undergone (and indeed is still undergoing) considerable development, although it has managed to retain some of its traditional character.  

There are many British residents both here and in Pollensa’s subsequent offshoot, Port de Pollenca, attracted by the stunning scenery, friendly locals and warm climate.  There is a strong artistic contingency here and there are several art galleries and shops as well as a painting school.  Artists of all kinds – painters, textile makers, musicians and poets have all made their home here over the last century.

The night life in Pollensa is essentially very low key, although there are few quiet bars and restaurants serving both traditional Mallorcan and international food.  Tacky souvenir shops are a rareity here, with most outlets focusing on art, fashion, jewellery and furniture.  There is also a market, every Sunday.

Investors have clamoured to buy property in Pollensa, which is considered to be a more upmarket area in Mallorca.  This has driven prices up and lead to an increase in the development of townhouses and luxury penthouse apartments.  Should you wish to buy a townhouse in Pollensa, for example, a five bedroom house will cost in the region of €900,000.
