Location

Palma Nova, one of the largest resorts in Mallorca, is situated on the south west coast of the island, around 15km from Palma.  It forms part of the Calvia municipality. Some 6km North of Palma Nova, tucked away in the hills behind the coast is the town of Calvia.

Description

Palma Nova and Magaluf are so close to each other, with each resort having grown over the years, it is now often difficult to tell where one ends and the other beings.  Palma Nova, however, tends to be slightly quieter than Magaluf, and more geared towards family holidays.

One of the earliest built holiday resorts on Mallorca, Palma Nova was originally a fishing village, still retaining its beautiful sandy beach (which tends to be a lot less busy than the one in Magaluf) and old fishing harbour.They now have the addition, however, of a more recent marina, attracting expensive yachts and sailing boats.

Although it cannot be argued that the summer months bring with them an exploding population, increased traffic, noisy music and tacky tourist facilities and souvenir shops, in the winter months, the resort changes. Many cafes and restaurants remain open for residents and more mature tourists, although the main facilities close down.  For many, this is the best time of year to explore not just Palma Nova, but Mallorca in general.

The tiny town of Calvia is the regions administrative centre - hence the oversized town hall, paid for by the profits of the tourist trade! The surroundings of this town is littered with many beautiful properties tucked away discreetly into the countryside.

Because it is a resort location, property prices in Palma Nova are relatively less expensive than in other areas of the island.  Nevertheless, there are still some beautiful properties to be found, away from the self catering apartments and hotels.  For example, a four bedroom villa in Palma Nova, right on the beach front, could be purchased for somewhere in the region of €800,000, making it ideal both for those who wish to stay in their own home in Palma Nova in the winter months, or for renting out to holiday makers in peak season. This said, just down the road in the surrounding areas of Calvia there are many very expensive and exclusive properties for sale fetching prices in excess of Euros 5,000,000.
