Llucmajor

Location

Based in the south west region of Mallorca, Llucmajor is the largest municipality on the island, with sixteen towns in the district, covering 327km.  It is around 15km from Palma.

Description

Llucmajor the municipality has around 30,000 permanent residents, around 4000 of these being foreigners – over 1,500 being German.

There is a variety of contrasting landscapes here – mountains, plains and beaches.  There are also several protected areas, nurturing wild olive trees, oaks, pines and grasses.

Llucmajor as a settlement dates back to prehistoric times, Capocorb Vell being the most famous archaeological site on Mallorca. The town itself dates back to the fourteenth century, with its narrow streets and other period features still in existence for all to see. The main sites of interest within the town are the church of Sant Miquel, built in the early 1800s and the convent of Sant Bonaventura, which dates back to the seventeenth century.

The town is sizeable, having around 10,000 residents.  Being around 15km from the coast, it is not particularly geared towards tourism, meaning that grateful residents are able to maintain the town’s traditional feel and way of life.  One of the main industries here is shoemaking, with a shoemakers’ memorial at the western town gate.

There is a twice weekly market held at the Plaza d’Espanya, where one can buy not only shoes, but the almonds and apricots which grow around the town.  There are also a number of good quality restaurants in the town and further shops at nearby Cala Pi. The beach of Es Trenc is only a 20 minute drive away and the local golf course only 10 minutes away.
